Half Girlfriend Story

Let’s start with the story of Half Girlfriend Chetan Bhagat: Madhav, a Bihari boy, can’t speak English but that doesn’t stop getting admission in a prestigious college in Delhi, thanks to his dribbling and shooting skills that get him the seat in sports quota.

Apart from helping him get a seat in college, his basketball skills also help him befriend a rich, beautiful, cheerful and English-bred (I mean high-class) girl, who considers him her just best friend while Gopal had different feelings and intentions.

The character of Madhav confuses me as I could not figure out how Chetan Bhagat, the bestselling author, wants him to portray. I don’t know why I don’t find  the lead character in Chetan Bhagat’s novel, Half Girlfriend, falling in love convincing. I could not understand when and how Madhav’s lust for Riya gets transformed into true love.

What Didn’t Work for Half Girlfriend Chetan Bhagat?

Chetan Bhagat has expectations to live up to and that pressure, as we see in Half Girlfriend Chetan Bhagat – his latest novel, makes him try commercially viable things. Or, he’s too confident that even if he does a shit people would be interested But whatever is the reason, all those who can identify quality reads, won’t like Half Girlfriend, the most anticipated novel by Chetan Bhagat much. However, despite all these problems, I still feel that he has addressed the issue of English-speaking vs Hindi-speaking students successfully.

For me, Half Girlfriend is a half-heart attempt (though I do understand his half-heart is what is best bet, don’t laugh readers, his fans think the other way)  at addressing the problem he claims to with the same spice of non-convincing, bollywood-topped romance; no wonder it’s going on celluloid. I am keeping this review almost open-ended because I want you to read the book and find out how you find it. For me it’s a half-grilled, half-heart novel which is written more for silver screen than for the paperback but that is the way storytelling these days has become. And the production of the film is already on the floors. Mohit Suri, Murder series fame, is directing the movie.

Half Girlfriend by Chetan Bhagat, let me tell you, is a half-grilled, immature and kiddish story, though it has become a trademark with Chetan Bhagat and has always worked wonders for him.
